GRANTS - SPRING 2001


We are pleased to present to the Irvington School Board the following gifts for the Spring 2001 school term:

IRVINGTON HIGH AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND DOWS LANE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Grades 4-12: (Michael Lee, Dr. Lola Garcia)- Music. Last fall the Foundation provided funds to launch an orchestral program at Dows Lane. The instructor, Mr. Lee has requested additional funds to expand the program to include a greater number of grades 4 and 5 students as well as middle and high school students. Award: $33,000.00


IRVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

Grades 9-12: This grant will support a 10 week drama workshop which culminates in a production. Riverworks will teach the course during two lunch periods per week. This program will not interfere with the high school production and will afford students who are not participating in the spring musical a drama experience opportunity. Award: $2,500.00


IRVINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL

Grade 6: (Charlotte Finelli) - Language Arts. This grant will support an extension of the successful Student's At Risk Writers' Workshop that the Foundation supported for last year's fifth grade students and is targeted at those whose writing skills did not meet the NYS ELA Standards. The program is designed to provide remedial writing instruction. Award: $2,600.00

Grade 8: (Chuck Johnson) - Science and Related Disciplines. This grant will supplement the funding of the Jason Project. This year's theme is Hawaii, a Living Laboratory. Groups consisting of 4-5 students will research a particular assigned topic and prepare a written and oral presentation as well as construct a related model. Award: $1,800.00

Grade 8: (James Groven and Julie Ippolito) - Language Arts. Susan Astor, a Poet in Residence will build on the existing English curriculum by engaging the students in creative writing through poetry. Award: $4,000.00


DOWS LANE ELEMENTARY

Grade 1: (Corinne Daniels) - Art. This grant will fund for the third year, a paper making project. The program was highly regarded and last year the students exhibited their work at the Gallery on the Hudson. Award: $5,045.00

Grade 5: (Joan Snell) - Mathematics. This grant will support the purchase of math videos which expose the students to a wide variety of reasoning strategies which will supplement the math program currently in use. It provides them with an opportunity to participate in hands on problem solving. Award: $675.40

Grade 5: (Scott Andrasko) - Science and Arts. This is a repeat grant of the Clearwater Sail which reinforces topics learned in the classroom during ecological studies. The students learn about the importance of the Hudson River in our community in discussions and interactive projects with the crew of the Clearwater. Award: $3,150.00

Grade 5: "Off the Wall" Art program under the auspices of the Gallery on the Hudson. It provides students with an opportunity to observe artists at work and they will create their own art. Included are visits to the Gallery, an introduction to works of art, a storytelling session and the creation of a studio student project all coordinated with the classroom teacher. Award: up to $4,300.00

Grades K-5: (Marilyn Horen) - Art. This grant will supplement a previous grant entitled "Art Masters" and will support the purchase of a memory game, "Art Lotto" developed by the National Gallery of Art as well as the purchase of frames for art previously donated by McGaw Graphics. Award: up to $1,138.00

Grade 1: (Laurie Warager) - Science/Visual Arts. This is a repeat grant which uses the medium of art to teach weather. Author/Illustrator, Colleen Carol will engage each classroom on the topic of weather in art. Award: $1,500.00


IRVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

Grades 9-12: (Michele Cella) - Latin- "Fabius the Tribune"- Presentation of life in ancient Rome by renowned Latin and Greek scholar. Award: $1,400.00


IRVINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL

Grades 6-8: History - "The Past Comes Alive". Donation by The History Channel, courtesy of Foundation member, Judy Frimer, which will bring the Time Machine Traveling Exhibit (currently on national tour) to the Middle School. It is an interactive mobile museum which offers students opportunity to challenge their knowledge through an exciting and interactive view into the past.
