GRANTS - SPRING 2002


We are pleased to present to the Irvington School Board the following gifts totaling $22,863.68 for the spring 2002 school semester:

IRVINGTON HIGH SCHOOL

Grades 6-12: (J. Molloy) - Library Research. This grant will fund one year of remote access capability for every student enabling them to conduct off site research for their English and Social Studies classes. Award: $3,500.00


Grades 9-12: (Anne Keary, Claudia Rodriguez) - College Guidance. This grant will fund a visit with a well known college counselor/author who will provide advice to parents on how to approach the college admissions process. Award: $1,200.


IRVINGTON MIDDLE SCHOOL

Grade 7: (M. Dobbs, J. Groven, D. Spangler, C. Mitchell, L. Dyno, D. Schmertz, J. Molloy) - English, Social Studies, Mathematics, Art and Library. This grant will support an interdisciplinary study on American Slavery providing students with an opportunity to analyze the reasons slavery could exist in America and how its legacy continues today in the form of racism. The project will incorporate multiple methods that will speak to different student learning styles. It includes building to scale a model slave ship. Award: $5,703.68


DOWS LANE ELEMENTARY 4-5 and MIDDLE SCHOOL

Grades 4-8: (A. Goldberg) - Orchestra. This grant will support the continued growth of the string program initiated last year by the IEF. It will provide for the purchase of additional violins and violas. Award: $3,500.00

DOWS LANE ELEMENTARY K-3

Grade - Kindergarten: (Claudia McNamara) - Reading. This grant will revitalize a kindergarten leveled library by providing all students with access to reading material that is appropriate and challenging consistent with the district's English Language Arts curriculum. It will allow for individualized instruction targeted at the student's reading ability. Award: $8,960.00
